• Press Release for “The Barnkeepers – A Celebration Of Ohio Barns and Those
That Keep Them” by photographer Michael S Cohen – March 31-may 15, 2017
Exhibit of Historic Ohio Barns Set To Open in Sandusky, OH – “The Barnkeepers: A
Celebration of Ohio Barns and Those Who Keep Them” is a new photographic exhibit
by New England-based photographer Michael S Cohen that will premiere at the
Carrington Arts gallery in Sandusky, OH on March 31. In the Spring of 2016, Cohen set
out to find and showcase some of Ohio’s most historic barns, and the owners who
maintain them. Driving some 1700 miles across the state over 10 days, the
photographer discovered barns dating back to the mid-1800’s that are still standing and
in use today.

Ohio’s rural heritage is well known and celebrated, and “Barnkeepers” pays particular
attention to the people who spend their time and money maintaining these great barn
buildings for the current and future generation of Ohioans. While there have been
several efforts to showcase barns across the state, this exhibit is the first to include the
people behind the barns in the portraits.
According the the Ohio History Connection, “Historic barns are not just rural relics, they
are important tangible reminders of Ohio's rural heritage. Many barns and other older
farm buildings can be rehabilitated to accommodate modern farming practices.”
When asked about the idea for the exhibit, Cohen said, “I drive through Ohio every year
and have seen glimpses of these great barns from the highway. Too many people just
don’t know the importance and the history that these buildings and their owners represent. In
our disposable society of processed food and instant gratification, these old barns display a
longevity and character that is hard to come by.”
One of the barns in the exhibit was built by a Civil War veteran and another is built on land that
was deeded by President Thomas Jefferson. Visitors to the exhibit will learn the history and see
the current condition of 20 different barns from across the state. Sample images at

“The Barnkeepers” runs March 31 – May 13 at Carrington Arts, 231 West Water Street,
Sandusky, Ohio.
